Frequently Asked Questions
  1. What is Stand Up Paddling?
Stand Up Paddling is a traditional Hawaiian sport which promotes balance, strength and general fitness. Participants use specialised long boards that provide a wide and very stable platform. A long paddle is used to glide the board across the water. It is awesome fun and a fantastic way to have either a gentle workout while learning something new or for those who wish to take it to the next level it can be an excellent way to provide an isometric workout that will strengthen your core muscles.

  2. Do I need to have previous surfing/paddling experience?
Absolutely not! Your first lesson will take place on flat water unless you sign up for the SUP Surf Lesson. However we do require that all participants must be able to swim a minimum of 25m.

  3. What are the age limits, am I too big or small?
SUP lessons are not just for kids! There are loads of SUP paddlers worldwide that are well over 70. This is a gentle activity, non - contact easier than learning how to surf and if performed correctly is far less stressful on the body than lots of other sports. We do however ask you to be in good health. Whilst we can cater for young children we recommend that the minimum age to join a group lesson is from age 10. Parents with younger children who wish to learn are advised to book a private lesson during which they must be in attendance at all times. Our boards can handle paddlers up to 280 pounds so come on and join us.

  4. Do you supply all the equipment?
Yes we supply the boards, paddles, leashes and wetsuits. If you have your own wetsuit you are welcome to bring it along.

  5. What do I need to bring?
Swimwear, towel, sunscreen, money for refreshments and plenty of enthusiasm! We advise you to bring a pair of old trainers or apropriate fotwear that you dont mind getting wet. (See coasteering sites)

  6. Where do we meet you and at what times?
Unless prior arrangements have been made we will meet you on Harlyn Beach by our beach cabin at the top end of the beach, look out for the Harlyn Surf School signs. Most lessons will take place from Harlyn although we will also use the Camel estuary in Padstow if conditions are not appropriate at Harlyn. Occasionally we may use other beaches in the local area. Lesson times are fixed at 10 - 12, 12 - 2, and 2-4pm, occasionally this may change if tidal conditions dictate. Clients must phone us the night before to reconfirm meeting point and lesson times. Please note we do not provide transport should we have to move to a different location.

  7. How long are the lessons?
SUP Starter lessons are for approx 2hrs, we ask you to register with us at least 15 mins prior to your lesson start time. This will give you time to complete our enrolment form, sort out your wetsuit fitting and make payment if necessary. SUP coastal or estuary tours last for approx 2.5hrs.

  8. Can I join a group?
Of course, group lessons are an excellent way of meeting other like minded people and are a great way to get introduced to the sport. When you enrol on one of our group lessons you are learning along with everyone else and sharing the same challenges and special moments.

  9. Do you offer private lessons?
Sure! A great way to accelerate your learning curve with 2hrs of personal one - on - one instruction with your own private instructor. Your lesson will be tailored to your exact ability and skill level. If you feel your are ready to enrol on our SUP Surf Sessions then these will always be on a 1:1 basis.

  10. Do you cater for group bookings, corporates and schools?
Yes for sure! We can tailor a days events to suit the ability or requirements of your group, we have over 15 years experience of working with groups. Give us a call and we will suggest a programme especially for your group!

  11. What happens if conditions are inappropriate?
Your safety is our top priority while learning with us. In the rare event that we deem the conditions to be inappropriate we will endeavour to reschedule your lesson for another convenient time. If your lesson cannot be rescheduled we will issue you with a voucher valid for 12 months. We advise all clients to read our

  12. What qualifications do the instructors have?

We have over 15 years experience of running one of Europes busiest surf schools alongside our beach lifeguard and surf instructor training centre. Our centre is licensed by the council and has BSA Level 4 Approval, the highest level achievable.
